Ryan's First Emergency Room Visit

Gorgonzola was known as “Baby Boy Tanaka” for the first few days in the postpartum unit, but Emily and I eventually settled on his name, "Ryan Takeshi Tanaka".

During the first two days after Ryan was discharged from hospital last Friday, he got increasingly fussy while we were trying to feed him.  He had too few wet diapers and too few stool diapers, and on Sunday, his temperature spiked into a fever.  His pediatrician had us take him to the emergency room.

When we got there, they attached him to an IV to hydrate him and, because he had a fever, he got a standard set of tests to check for infections: a spinal tap to check for meningitis, a blood sample to check for a blood infection, and a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. Since we needed to stay in the hospital for 48 hours to get the blood and urine culture results, they decided to also give him phototherapy to lower his bilirubin levels.

We ended up staying in the hospital for four nights, so that the doctor could monitor his weight after the IV was discontinued, and because one of his vital sign checks showed his temperature being a bit low.

His pediatrician discharged him today, and we’re back at home with a much happier baby boy who is thankfully keeping us awake by eating more and filling many more diapers, instead of with fussing and crying.

glad to hear it!

Glad to hear everyone is doing OK. We had to put Beatrice in the hospital for a few days a week or so after she was born - she was also under the UV lamps. It's sad and cute that they have the little baby tanning masks. Best to everyone and love from the Kumars.
