Perhaps the short attention span and poor memory that comes from using search engines and the world wide web is actually the brain deciding to just keep an "index" of things that it has seen on the internet, instead of trying to store everything.  All it stores is a summary of what it has seen, along with enough information to be able to find it again with a search engine, later.
